Why is my baby’s skin so dry? - Ziggy's Pudding

Why is my baby’s skin so dry?

So old man winter has come around again…

AND you can’t seem to keep up with the moisture of your baby’s skin. Trust me, I know. Let's compare winter to summer… Summer is super hot, sweaty, steamy, and humid. In some areas it is more humid than others. Either season is extreme, but we often see the dry cracking skin much more in the winter.

Why is winter so harsh on your skin and what can you do about it?

Let’s first get into why winter is so harsh on your baby’s skin…
Wintery conditions can be detrimental to your baby’s skin because the cold dry air strips the skin of its protective layers, leaving skin susceptible to breaking, cracking and being extremely dry. When it’s cold, naturally our homes are cold and we blast the heat all the time. Well, when the heat is always on, the air in your home becomes dry.

Dry air, especially at night, dries up mucous membranes, like your baby’s nose and mouth and it dries their delicate skin.

So what’s our solution…

Use a humidifier in your baby’s nursery and/or room. Humidity is great for people with dry skin, especially with skin conditions like eczema. Humidity quenches the skin and offers the much needed moisture people with dry skin and eczema often need. Increased humidity can also help skin keep moisture and reduce dry, flaky skin conditions.

With humidity, there has to be a balance. Too much humidity, however, can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria which can cause skin rashes, skin infections and skin irritations.

According to dermatologist Elizabeth Farhat, MD of Allina Health, a humidity of 60% is ideal to prevent dry skin, but 30-40% is more practical in your home.

Should you keep the humidifier on all the time?

  • I suggest you keep it on at night to achieve the desired humidity in your baby’s room.

  • Other ways to increase the humidity in your room…
  • If you have a bathroom, or shower next to your room, run a hot shower and allow the steam to seep into your bedroom.
  • You can also try running a bath, letting the water sit for a while before draining the water.
  • Boil a large pot of water on your stove and the steam will help increase the humidity in your home.
